Best Time to Go to Madeira – Weather & Seasons

By Linda | Last updated: April 2, 2026 | Madeira

The best time to go Madeira is different for everyone – hikers, beach lovers, and festival goers will all find their perfect season. Madeira, often called the “island of eternal spring,” is a dream destination all year round. But if you’re asking yourself what is the best time to go to Madeira, the answer depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Thanks to its mild climate, lush landscapes, and microclimates, Madeira offers something special every season.

Weather on Madeira is famously changeable – you can experience all four seasons in one day. This is because the island is mountainous, with big differences between the sunny south and the rugged, rainy north. Always dress in layers, as conditions can shift quickly.

Summer in Madeira

Summer (June–August) is the warmest and driest season, with daytime temperatures around 24 °C (75 °F) and nights rarely cooler than 17 °C. This is also peak season, so flights and hotels are most expensive. Although Madeira isn’t a classic beach destination, the ocean is around 20–22 °C, making it refreshing for swimming.

Fireworks shows in Funchal – Festival do Atlântico (every Saturday in June), the Madeira Rally, and the Ultra Skymarathon.

If you’re planning a summer trip, book your accommodation early – hotels in Funchal and near the coast sell out fast.

Winter in Madeira

Winter (December–February) is considered low season, but don’t be discouraged – compared to mainland Europe, it’s still mild. In the south, temperatures average 18–20 °C (64–68 °F), while the mountains can even see snow. January is the rainiest month, and some hiking trails may close.
On the plus side, waterfalls are at their most spectacular, and February brings Madeira’s famous Carnival.
