The Formentor Peninsula is one of Mallorca’s most famous natural attractions, located near Port de Pollença on the island’s northern coast. Stretching for around 20 km, the peninsula is known for its dramatic cliffs, spectacular viewpoints, and crystal-clear coves. Many visitors consider it the most beautiful part of Mallorca.
The drive through Mallorca Formentor is an attraction in itself. The narrow winding road follows the coastline high above the Mediterranean Sea, revealing breathtaking views around every corner. Towering cliffs, rocky outcrops rising from the water, and pine trees clinging to the mountainsides create a truly unique landscape.
We visited in October, when seasonal restrictions were still in place. Both Mirador des Colomer and the lighthouse were already busy with visitors, so it’s easy to imagine how crowded the area becomes during peak summer months. If possible, arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the light is at its most beautiful.

How to Get to Formentor Peninsula
The peninsula is easily accessible from Alcúdia, Playa de Muro, and Port de Pollença. Depending on your starting point, you can reach the entrance in around 20–30 minutes by car. However, summer traffic restrictions make it important to plan your visit in advance.
Getting to the Formentor Peninsula has changed significantly in recent years. During the summer season, access for private vehicles is restricted in order to protect the environment and reduce congestion.
By Car
The peninsula can be reached via the scenic Ma-2210 road from Port de Pollença. The route is incredibly beautiful, but it is also narrow and winding, so extra caution is recommended.
During the peak season, usually from mid-May to mid-October, access for private vehicles toward the lighthouse is restricted during daytime hours. The exact dates may vary from year to year, so it’s always worth checking the latest information before your visit.
During restricted periods, visitors can usually drive as far as the parking area near Platja de Formentor. From there, the lighthouse can only be reached by bus, taxi, bicycle, or on foot.
Based on our experience, there was already a long queue at the bus stop next to the parking area in October. During the summer months, it may be more convenient to board the bus directly in Alcúdia or Port de Pollença.

One of my favorite search sites is Discovercars.com, because there are no hidden costs, you can cancel the reservation for free if your travel plans change, and last but not least, they offer rental cars at very reasonable prices. The filters allow you to select the type of card you want to use, the amount of the deposit and the payment terms.
By Bus
One of the easiest ways to visit Mallorca Formentor is by using the TIB L334 bus, which connects Alcúdia, Port de Pollença, and the lighthouse.
The route stops at several key locations:
- Mirador des Colomer
- Platja de Formentor
- Cala Figuera
- Cap de Formentor Lighthouse

The bus is especially convenient during the summer season, as you won’t have to worry about parking.
By Boat
Several boat tours operate from both Port de Pollença and Alcúdia. Exploring the peninsula from the sea is one of the most scenic ways to experience the area, offering incredible views of the cliffs and hidden coves.
By Bicycle
The Formentor Peninsula is one of Mallorca’s most famous cycling routes. Cyclists are allowed access throughout the year, which is why the road is often busy with bikes. If you’re driving, be patient, as there are many sections where overtaking is difficult.

Mirador des Colomer
Mirador des Colomer is the most famous viewpoint on the peninsula and one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Mallorca. Located just a few miles from Port de Pollença, it offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, the rugged coastline, and the iconic Colomer rock formation.
The parking area is relatively small, so finding a space can be difficult during summer. The main viewpoint is only a short walk away, but it’s also worth taking the trail in the opposite direction toward the old watchtower.
From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Formentor Peninsula as well as the Bays of Pollença and Alcúdia.
Where to Stay in Mallorca
If you’re looking for a great base in Mallorca, I recommend Cala Millor. Compared to popular resort towns like Alcúdia, Cala Millor often offers better value for money while still providing everything most travelers are looking for: a beautiful beach, a lively promenade, plenty of restaurants, and a great selection of accommodations.
What I loved most about Cala Millor is its long, wide sandy beach with crystal-clear water. Many hotels are located directly on the beachfront, allowing you to walk from your room to the sea in just a few minutes.

Platja de Formentor
Platja de Formentor is one of the peninsula’s most popular beaches. The long sandy shoreline is backed by pine trees, while the shallow, crystal-clear water makes it a great place to relax.
The main parking area for the peninsula is located here, so during seasonal restrictions many visitors leave their cars and continue toward the lighthouse by bus.
The beach also offers several facilities, including restaurants, restrooms, and other visitor services.

Cala Figuera
Cala Figuera is one of the lesser-known spots on the Formentor Peninsula. While it’s not the best location for swimming, its wild natural setting makes it worth a stop for a short walk or some photography.
The bus also stops here, making it easy to include in a full-day Formentor itinerary.
Cap de Formentor Lighthouse
Located at the very end of the peninsula, the Cap de Formentor Lighthouse is one of Mallorca’s most iconic landmarks. The lighthouse was inaugurated in 1863 and still operates today.
Perched on a cliff 210 meters above sea level, it offers some of the most impressive views on the island. The road leading to the lighthouse winds through dramatic scenery, and the panoramic views at the end are well worth the journey.
On exceptionally clear days, you may even be able to spot Menorca on the horizon.
We took a short walk around the area before enjoying a sangria at the bar next to the lighthouse. We met plenty of hikers and cyclists who had come for the same reason: the incredible views.
Standing at the edge of the peninsula, it’s easy to understand why Cap de Formentor is one of the most photographed places in Mallorca.
