Distance & Duration: Around 10 km, taking between 2.5–4 hours depending on your pace and whether you stop for photos or a detour to Skaros Rock.
Trail Type: A mix of urban streets, stone-paved paths, and gravel trails. Not technically difficult, but some elevation gain and exposure to the sun.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate, depending on fitness. Suitable for older kids, but summer heat and inclines make it less ideal for small children.
Best Time to Start: Early in the morning before the sun gets too strong, or late afternoon to arrive in Oia for the famous sunset (expect crowds).
Direction: Walking from Fira to Oia is more scenic, with views of the town unfolding in front of you.
Transportation: Local buses run frequently between the two towns (about 20–25 minutes). In peak summer they can get crowded, so allow some waiting time.

What to Bring on the Fira Oia Hike
Water & Snacks: There are very few places to buy drinks along the trail. Carry at least 1.5–2 liters of water in summer. A few shops and cafés are available in Imerovigli, but don’t rely on them.
Gear: Comfortable closed shoes or hiking sandals, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Shade is minimal once you leave the villages.

Fira → Oia hike Description
1. Fira → Imerovigli
The hike begins in Santorini’s capital, Fira, just a few minutes from the central bus stop near the Atlantis Hotel. From the very first steps, you’ll enjoy sweeping caldera views with the sea on your left and whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches on your right. Soon you’ll pass landmarks like the cable car station, the Atlantis bookstore, and the Orthodox Church with three bells – a famous photo spot.
Without noticing, you’ll enter Firostefani, where some of the island’s best viewpoints are located. Once you pass the Orthodox church with three bells, you are in Firostefani. This spot offers one of the most beautiful views of the island, so it’s worth stopping for a few photos.
2. Imerovigli → Skaros Rock
Next comes Imerovigli, often called Santorini’s “balcony” thanks to its elevated position and stunning vistas. Here you’ll find cozy cafés and restaurants, and the trail stays closest to the caldera for uninterrupted views.
This is also where you can take a detour to Skaros Rock. The side trip takes about an hour, with a steep descent and climb back, but it’s well worth it if you have time and energy.

3. Skaros Rock → Oia
Beyond Imerovigli, the crowds thin out, and the path becomes quieter, continuing as a gravel trail along the cliffside. Before you reach the Prophet Elias Church at the top of the hill, there is an uphill climb. From the church, head downhill until you reach the paved road.
Here, the trail ends and you will have to walk along the edge of the road for a short while. Shortly after the snack bar, the trail continues on gravel terrain. This section includes the most difficult climb of the hike, a steady uphill stretch with the chapel in the distance. From there, the descent into Oia begins – perhaps the most scenic part of the entire journey.
As you approach the village, whitewashed houses and blue domes appear in the distance, growing closer until you finally enter Oia’s picturesque alleyways. Here you can either catch a bus back to Fira or stay to enjoy dinner while watching Santorini’s world-famous sunset.

My Experience on the Hike from Fira to Oia
Although we traveled to Santorini mainly for relaxation, this hike was a must-do on my list. We stayed in Oia, so we took a bus to Fira in the morning to start the trail. Unfortunately, we lingered too long exploring Fira and ended up hiking the toughest stretch in the midday heat.
My advice: start as early as possible or time your hike so that you arrive in Oia just before sunset. Bring plenty of water, wear proper shoes, and prepare for little shade along the way. Despite the challenges, the views were unforgettable, and this 10 km hike turned out to be one of the best experiences of our Santorini trip.
