Weather in the Azores can be unpredictable, so flexibility is key. Some of the island’s most famous spots like Lagoa do Fogo or Sete Cidades are only worth visiting when visibility is good.
A great tip is to check live webcams across the island before heading out. If a viewpoint is covered in clouds, simply switch your plans and visit another area instead.
Also, renting a car is highly recommended. It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and reach remote viewpoints and hidden spots.

Day 1: Sete Cidades – The West Side of Sao Miguel
The western side of São Miguel is best explored on a clear, sunny day, when you can fully enjoy the island’s most famous viewpoints and volcanic landscapes.
Start with Miradouro do Pico do Carvão, then continue towards Lagoa do Canário and the iconic Boca do Inferno viewpoint. A short walk leads to one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Azores.
Next, stop at Vista do Rei and Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras, both offering incredible views over the twin lakes of Sete Cidades. Before heading down into the village, don’t miss Miradouro da Lagoa de Santiago, overlooking a beautiful green crater lake.
Spend some time in Sete Cidades village, walk along the lakeshore, and visit the charming Igreja de São Nicolau church.
In the afternoon, continue along the western coastline with stops at Miradouro da Lomba do Vasco and Miradouro da Ilha Sabrina, where you can admire the volcanic coastline and thermal pools from above.
Finish the day at Ferraria, one of the most unique places in Sao Miguel, where you can swim in a natural ocean thermal pool heated by volcanic activity.
If the weather is good, end your day with sunset in Mosteiros, one of the best sunset spots on the island.
Day 2: Lagoa do Fogo & Caldeira Velha
Day two is all about nature, waterfalls, and thermal baths.
Start early and head to Lagoa do Fogo, one of the most beautiful crater lakes on São Miguel. Stop at Pico da Barrosa and other viewpoints along the way, then hike down to the lake if the weather allows.
After taking in the views, continue to Caldeira Velha, a lush nautral thermal bath surrounded by jungle-like vegetation. It’s the perfect place to relax after a morning of exploring.
If you’re up for a short adventure, visit Salto do Cabrito waterfall, either as a quick stop or as part of a longer hike.
On your way back, explore Ribeira Grande, a charming town known for its architecture and relaxed atmosphere.

During peak season, the area around Lake Fogo is closed off for environmental reasons and to avoid traffic congestion.
During this time, it can only be accessed by shuttle bus; tickets can be purchased on the official website or at one of the partner offices. The ticket can be used multiple times on the same day (hop-on hop-off system) between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Outside of these hours, you can also drive up to the lake. If you’d like to visit the lake as part of an organized tour, you won’t need the bus, as taxis and tour operators are allowed to drive into the area.
Day 3: Furnas, Lagoa do Congro & Vila Franca do Campo
This day combines geothermal wonders with scenic viewpoints and coastal stops.
Start in Vila Franca do Campo, then visit the iconic Nossa Senhora da Paz chapel, famous for its symmetrical staircases.
Next, take a short hike to Lagoa do Congro, a peaceful hidden lake surrounded by dense forest.
Continue to Furnas, one of the most unique places in the Azores. Here, you’ll find fumaroles, hot springs, and geothermal activity everywhere.
Enjoy a traditional cozido lunch, then visit either Terra Nostra Park or Poça da Dona Beija for a relaxing thermal bath.
Before leaving, walk around Lagoa das Furnas and explore the surrounding park and waterfalls.

If you’re staying on the island for a while, it’s worth spending a night or two in Furnas so you can explore the eastern part of the island without having to travel as much.
