Where is Terceira Island?
The Azores are a group of nine volcanic islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, belonging to Portugal.
They are divided into three groups:
- Western Group: Flores, Corvo
- Central Group: Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa, Terceira
- Eastern Group: São Miguel, Santa Maria
Terceira is part of the central group and is one of the most culturally rich islands in the archipelago.

How to Get to Terceira Island and How to Get Around
There are two ways to travel between the islands.
You can fly between the three groups, and take a ferry between the individual islands within each group. The exception is the eastern island group, where two of the islands (São Miguel and Santa Maria) are so far apart from each other and from the other islands that flying is the only option.
Flights
The easiest way to reach Terceira Island Azores is by plane.
- Direct flights from Portugal and North America
- Connections from Europe and from all over the world
- Inter-island flights with SATA (very frequent)
Ferry
- Available mainly between central islands. The Atlanticoline ferry company operates routes between the various islands in the archipelago.
- Not available from São Miguel, because it’s too far away
How to Get Around Terceira
The best way to explore Terceira is by car.
Public transport is limited, and many of the best viewpoints and natural attractions are only accessible by car.

How Many Days Do You Need on Terceira Island?
For a first visit, I usually recommend exploring no more than 2 or 3 islands (unless you’re planning to stay in the archipelago for at least a few weeks). Choose the largest island, São Miguel, and 1 or 2 smaller ones. When making your reservation, keep in mind that Terceira has two ferry terminals: Praia da Vitória and Angra do Heroísmo.
Plan to spend at least 2–3 days on Terceira Island.
Take your time and explore all three regions of the island at a leisurely pace.

Best Things to Do in Terceira Island
Terceira Island East & South
This part of the island combines coastal views, historic towns, and some of the best viewpoints in Terceira.
Serra do Cume Viewpoint (Must-See)
Serra do Cume is easily one of the most breathtaking viewpoints not only on Terceira Island, but in the entire Azores. From the top, you’ll see an endless patchwork of green fields stretching toward the ocean, often referred to as the island’s famous “green quilt.”
It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to slow down and just take in the view for a while. If you can, plan your visit around sunset for the best light, but always check the weather first, as the area is often covered in fog.
- Sunset is especially beautiful here.
- Avoid visiting in fog – visibility can drop to zero.
Praia da Vitória & Prainha Beach
Praia da Vitória is a charming coastal town with a much more relaxed atmosphere than Angra do Heroísmo. What makes it stand out is its sandy beach – something quite rare in the Azores, where most coastlines are volcanic and rocky.
It’s a great place to take a break, walk along the promenade, or simply enjoy a slower pace for a few hours.

Just above Praia da Vitória, Miradouro do Facho offers a panoramic view over the town, the marina, and the surrounding coastline. It’s an easy stop with a big reward, especially if you enjoy viewpoints without a long hike.
Even on calm days, the wind can be surprisingly strong up here, so be prepared for that.
Ponta das Contendas Lighthouse
Located on the southeastern tip of the island, Ponta das Contendas Lighthouse sits in a remote and rugged setting with uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean. The dramatic cliffs and crashing waves make this one of the most atmospheric spots on Terceira.
The drive itself is part of the experience, especially if you take the scenic coastal roads instead of the main route.
Natural Pools in Porto Martins
Along the eastern coast, Porto Martins is home to natural lava pools that are perfect for a refreshing swim during the warmer months. The pools are well maintained and easy to access, making them one of the best swimming spots on the island.
With facilities like showers and restaurants nearby, it’s also a convenient stop if you’re spending a full day exploring this part of Terceira.
Ilhéus das Cabras (Goat Islets)
Just off the coast, the Ilhéus das Cabras are a pair of small volcanic islets formed by ancient underwater eruptions. Over time, erosion split them into two separate formations, creating one of the island’s most unique natural landmarks.
The best way to experience them is by boat, where you can get closer to the cliffs and learn more about their geological history and wildlife.

Explore Angra do Heroísmo

No visit to Terceira Island in the Azores is complete without spending some time in Angra do Heroísmo, the island’s historic capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This colorful town is one of the most charming places in the Azores, with its pastel-colored buildings, cobbled streets, and relaxed atmosphere. It’s easy to wander around without a plan – just walking through the old town already feels like stepping back in time.
Angra has played an important role in Portuguese history, once even serving as the capital of the Portuguese Empire. Today, it’s the cultural heart of Terceira, where traditions, festivals, and everyday life blend together in a very authentic way.
One of the highlights is Monte Brasil, a volcanic peninsula right next to the town. You can drive or hike up for beautiful panoramic views over Angra and the coastline. It’s also a great place for a short walk surrounded by nature.
Other places worth seeing include:
- Sé Cathedral (one of the largest churches in the Azores)
- Duke of Terceira Garden (a peaceful green oasis in the city)
- The marina and waterfront area
Even if you only have a couple of days on Terceira, make sure to dedicate at least a few hours to Angra – it’s one of those places that gives the island its unique character.

Terceira Island Central Area
The central part of the island is dominated by volcanic landscapes, caves, and lush forests, offering some of the most unique experiences in the Azores.
Algar do Carvão (Highlight)
Algar do Carvão is without a doubt one of the most unique places you can visit in the Azores. Unlike most volcanic chimneys, this one remains open, allowing visitors to walk deep inside an extinct volcano.
As you descend, the environment changes dramatically – lush vegetation clings to the walls, and at the bottom, you’ll find a small underground lagoon. It’s a surreal experience and one of the absolute highlights of Terceira Island.
Humidity inside the cave is always very high (over 90%), so water constantly drips from the walls.
You can descend into Algar do Carvão through a tunnel, and from there, several flights of stairs lead to various viewing platforms. The floor is concrete and is always wet.
Furnas do Enxofre
Furnas do Enxofre is a geothermal area where you can see and smell the island’s volcanic activity up close. Steam rises from the ground, and the air is filled with a distinct sulfur scent, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
A short wooden walkway makes it easy to explore the area, and it pairs perfectly with a visit to nearby attractions. The volcanic features aren’t as spectacular as those in Furnas on São Miguel, but the view makes it worth a visit.
Gruta do Natal Lava Tube
Gruta do Natal offers a completely different underground experience compared to Algar do Carvão. This lava tube stretches for hundreds of meters and allows you to walk through narrow volcanic passages formed thousands of years ago.
Some sections are tighter than others, which makes the visit a bit more adventurous, but still manageable for most travelers.
Humidity in the cave is always very high (over 90%), so water constantly drips inside the cave.
The ground is quite uneven, and in many places it is difficult to move around, which makes the tour exciting. Helmets are required inside the cave and are provided at the reception desk.

Serra de Santa Bárbara Viewpoint
As the highest point on the island, Serra de Santa Bárbara offers incredible panoramic views on a clear day. From the top, you can see large parts of Terceira and even some of the neighboring islands.
Because of its elevation, the weather here changes quickly, so visibility isn’t always guaranteed.
Lagoa das Patas
Hidden among dense greenery, Lagoa das Patas is a peaceful forest park centered around a small lake. It’s a great place to slow down, have a picnic, or take a short walk under the shade of tall trees.
The surrounding vegetation, including hydrangeas and azaleas, makes it especially beautiful during the warmer months.
Mistérios Negros Hike
If you’re looking for one of the most interesting hikes on Terceira, Mistérios Negros is a great choice. The trail takes you through volcanic terrain covered with moss, lava rocks, and dense forest.
While it’s not extremely difficult, the path can be technical in some sections, so proper footwear is recommended.

The northern part of Terceira is known for its lava landscapes, natural pools, and wine culture, offering a different atmosphere compared to the rest of the island.
Biscoitos Natural Pools (Must-Visit)
The natural pools of Biscoitos are among the most unique swimming spots on Terceira Island. Formed by black volcanic rocks, these pools create a striking contrast with the deep blue ocean.
Thanks to the well-developed infrastructure, it’s an easy and comfortable place to swim, relax, or spend a few hours by the coast.
Biscoitos Wine Museum
Biscoitos is also known for its wine production, and the local wine museum offers a glimpse into this tradition. The vineyards here grow in volcanic soil, protected by stone walls, creating a very distinctive landscape.
It’s a small but interesting stop, especially if you enjoy local culture and gastronomy.
Agualva Coast & Viewpoints
The coastline around Agualva is shaped by volcanic activity, resulting in dramatic cliffs and unique rock formations. It’s a quieter part of the island, perfect if you’re looking to escape the more popular spots.
The viewpoints here offer impressive ocean views without the crowds.

On the island of Terceira, we come across colorful little chapels at every turn, each one inviting us to stop and take a look. The exteriors of all the buildings are adorned with bright, cheerful colors, and each is topped with an imperial crown. The island’s most unique attractions.

Final Thoughts: Is Terceira Island Worth Visiting?
If you’re looking for a destination that combines nature, culture, and fewer crowds, Terceira Island in the Azores is a fantastic choice. It may not have as many famous attractions as São Miguel, but what it offers is authentic, diverse, and incredibly scenic.
We spent three days on the island in May. The weather was changeable, but we enjoyed every minute regardless. It’s much calmer and more relaxing than the main island, which is why I enjoyed the days spent here even more.
