Adolf Munkel Weg Hike

Basic information

The Adolf Munkel Weg is a 9.2 km long trail that runs between Rifugio Malga Brogles and Rifugio Genova (Schlüterhütte) at the northern foot of the Odle Group (marked in brown on the google map).

As neither Rifugio Brogles nor Rifugio Genova can be reached by car or bus, the Adolf Munkel hiking trail is most easily accessed from the Zannes/Zans car park at the end of the Val di Funes valley (marked in red on the map above). It is worth returning to the parking lot via trail 36, which passes through the Geisler Alm.

Adolf Munkel Weg Hike Description via Geisler Alm

1. Zanser Alm → Trail 6

(marked in red on the map)

The hike begins on a gravel and forest trail climbing gently from the Zanser Alm parking area. You’ll already catch glimpses of the Odle peaks through the trees. Continue to a bridge and trail intersection.

2. Adolf Munkel Weg – Trail 35

(marked in brownon the map)

At the junction, turn right onto trail 35 – the Adolf Munkel Weg. This is the most scenic part of the route, running directly below the massive rock walls of the Geisler group. You’ll walk through forests and open meadows, with constant views of the peaks above.

After about 4 km, you’ll reach another junction where you can:

  • Stay on trail 35 → 36 for the full loop via Gschnagenhardt Alm and Geisler Alm, or

  • Shortcut via trail 36A directly to Geisler Alm (less recommended due to less scenic views).

3. Adolf Munkel weg → Geisler Alm – Trail 36

(marked in yellow on the map)

If you have chosen the longer route, you must turn off path 35 onto path 36. Here you leave the Adolf Munkel Weg trail, which continues on to the Brogles Alm hut.

After a short climb you will find yourself in a picturesque meadow. Turn back and you’ll find incredible views. First you touch the Gschnagenhardt Alm (Malga Casnago), then after a short walk you arrive at the Geisler Alm. Both huts have panoramic terraces, deck chairs, and playgrounds — perfect for a rest and local meal.

Tip: Geisler Alm is more popular and often busier; if you’re looking for a quieter lunch spot, Gschnagenhardt Alm may be your best bet.

4. Geisler Alm → Return to Parking -Trail 36

(marked in yellow on the map)

From Geisler Alm, follow trail 36 back to Zanser Alm. The first section is on a wider gravel road, then there’s a marked trail veering off to the right through the forest. This descent takes about 1 hour and passes Dusler Alm, another peaceful hut option.

Alternative Routes & Tips

  • If you’re staying in Ortisei (Val Gardena), you can reach Adolf Munkel Weg via the Resciesa Plateau — a longer, more challenging route.

  • Another option is to hike to Brogles Alm, then return via trail 28 to Ranui. Note: this route doesn’t include Geisler Alm and requires a bus ride back to Zanser Alm.

  • Some visitors skip Adolf Munkel Weg and hike only to Geisler Alm via trail 36 and back — a great shorter alternative with amazing views, but less variety.

Final Thoughts

The Adolf Munkel Weg is one of the most beautiful and accessible hikes in the Dolomites. With epic views, peaceful forests, and cozy alpine huts, it offers a true taste of South Tyrol — without the strain of high-altitude trekking. Whether you’re traveling with kids, hiking solo, or just want to experience the grandeur of the Geisler mountains, this trail is a must.
