Lago di Braies – How to visit Braies lake in 2026

Lago di Braies – A Fairytale Lake in the Dolomites

If there’s one place in the Dolomites that seems to come straight out of a dream, it’s Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee in German). With its emerald green water, dramatic mountain backdrop, and iconic wooden boathouse, this alpine lake in South Tyrol has become a symbol of natural beauty in northern Italy. It’s no surprise that it’s also one of the most photographed places in the region.

In this post, I’ll share everything you need to know about visiting Lago di Braies, from the best time to go and how to plan your walk around the lake, to practical tips that will make your trip smoother.

How to get to Lago di Braies

Lago di Braies lies in the Alta Pusteria (Hochpustertal) region of South Tyrol, not far from the towns of Dobbiaco (Toblach), Villabassa (Niederdorf), and San Candido (Innichen). It’s also within reach from Cortina d’Ampezzo and other popular Dolomites destinations.

From late July to early September, private car access is restricted between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. You’ll need to either:

  • Arrive early or late to drive to the lake and park.

  • Reserve a parking spot online in advance.

  • Use the local shuttle bus system from nearby villages.

Even during restricted hours, overnight guests at hotels near the lake are allowed to drive in with confirmation.

Parking at Lago di Braies

There are several large parking areas within walking distance of the lake. During the restricted summer period, P1 and P2 are available only with online booking. Outside of these dates, you can park freely (for a fee) as long as spaces are available.

To avoid parking hassles, arrive early, especially in July and August.

In 2026, from 10 July to 10 September, between 9:30 in the morning and 16:00 in the afternoon, only valid tickets purchased online could be used to access the parking spaces in the valley. It is possible to enter before this time without an online reservation.

Useful information

Practical tips for visiting Lago di Braies

  • Get there early: Before 9:00 a.m. if you want to avoid crowds, especially in high season.

  • Wear proper shoes: Even though the trail is easy, the eastern side has some roots and rocks.

  • No swimming: Bathing is prohibited in Lake Braies! Most people just dip their feet in the shallows.

  • Pet-friendly: The walking route is dog-friendly!

  • Toilets and cafés: Available near the parking area and hotel by the lake. There is also a toilet at the picnic area on the opposite bank.

  • Drones: Drones are not allowed in the Lago di Braies area.

When to visit Lago di Braies

Lago di Braies is accessible all year round, but each season offers a different experience:

  • Spring: Melting snow and fewer crowds, though some trails might still be muddy or closed.

  • Summer: Peak season with warm weather, open boat rentals, and long daylight hours — but expect crowds.

  • Autumn: The larch trees turn golden, and the air is crisp. It’s quieter and ideal for photography.

  • Winter: The lake freezes and is covered in snow, creating a serene atmosphere. Walking paths are still accessible with proper footwear.

The most popular time is June to September, especially early morning or late afternoon when the light is best and the lake is less busy.

Car rental – Tip

Search and book a car on one of the popular search portals and find the best deal for you!
One of my favorite search sites is Discovercars.com, because there are no hidden costs, you can cancel the reservation for free if your travel plans change, and last but not least, they offer rental cars at very reasonable prices. The filters allow you to select the type of card you want to use, the amount of the deposit and the payment terms.

A lake that changes color

Lago di Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee in German, lies at 1496 meters above sea level. Its surreal beauty comes from the way the water constantly changes color depending on the light — from emerald to turquoise, and even to deep blue.

Its fame is not just due to social media. The lake is part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park and is surrounded by majestic peaks, including the Seekofel (Croda del Becco), which rises dramatically behind the lake. In the early morning, the water is often still, reflecting the mountains like a mirror.

The lake is especially popular at sunrise — the golden light over the Seekofel creates a magical atmosphere that attracts photographers and nature lovers from around the world.

Pro Tip!

If you want to take photos of the boats lined up like the ones you see on the internet, you should arrive before 8-9am or after 6-7pm, depending on the season.

Take a boat ride on Lago di Braies

Rowing on Lago di Braies is one of the most iconic experiences in the Dolomites. The wooden boats and the charming boathouse have become symbolic of the lake, and even though this activity is now a popular tourist attraction, it’s still a wonderful way to enjoy the calm of the water.

  • Boat rental is available from late May to early October, depending on weather conditions.

  • You can rent a rowing boat for 45 minutes at the boat harbour (no online booking). In summer the waiting time can be up to one and a half hours.

  • Price: €55 for a private rowing boat (max. 5 people) ; €20 per person for a shared rowing boat also for max. 5 people.

Where to Book accommodation

The 3-star Hotel Lago di Braies is located on the shores of the lake, which seems an obvious solution. If you fancy a look around the nearby villages, you’ll find what’s on offer here. For example, the alpine-style Speckstube Eggerhof is very close to the lake. We stayed at the Olympia Camping in Dobbiaco Toblach, 14 km away. We came with a camper van, but there are also very cosy cottages on the campsite and the prices in town are more reasonable than in the immediate vicinity of the lake.

Hiking around Lago di Braies

Basic information

Distance: approx. 3.7 km full loop
Difficulty: easy
Total elevation gain: 100 metres
Duration: 1.5-2 hours

One of the best activities is a walk along the path around the lake at Lago di Braies. As it is a circular walk, it can be done in both directions. We walked clockwise.

Drones are not allowed in the Lago di Braies area.
Bathing is forbidden in Lake Braies!
The walking route is dog-friendly!

Description of the circular walk

We walked clockwise around the lake, so I will describe it in the same way. From the parking lot, walk to the hotel, thenturn left towards the boat rental. Depending on the season, expect long lines and a small crowd here. After leaving the rental shop, continue on the marked path. After leaving the northern tip of Lago di Braies, the path starts to climb slowly, but it’s not too bad and children can easily walk along it.

From here you can see the chapel on the far bank, and then slowly the hotel building. The trail climbs steadily here, so you can see the lake and the boats rocking on it from higher up. There will be steps in places, but don’t be alarmed as this section is quite short. At the far end of the lake you’ll come back down to the shore, and then there’s a picnic area and a toilet.

Optional detour

If you want to take a detour, you can cross the wooden bridge and walk for about 20-30 minutes to reach the Grünwaldalm hut (Malga Foresta). As it is an easy walk around the lake, we visited the hut as well.
Back on the original path, it’s really only a short walk. Near the hotel you’ll find the Capella Lago di Braies (Chapel Pragser Wildsee) and Emma’s Bistro.

Public toilets:

  • P3 car park
  • Across the lake, at the picnic area
  • Catering facilities
