Ferries from Naples

The island of Capri can only be reached by sea. Ferries depart regularly from two main ports in Naples:

  • Molo Beverello – for passenger-only high-speed ferries (SNAV or NLG)

  • Porta di Massa – for both high-speed and regular ferries, including those that carry vehicles (Caremar company)

From the Naples International Airport, you can easily reach either port using the Alibus shuttle, which stops at both. A ticket costs about €5.

High-speed ferries take around 50 minutes (operated by companies like Caremar, SNAV or NLG), while regular ferries make the same trip in about 80 minutes (Caremar). Tickets typically cost between €20 and €30 one way, depending on the company and time of day. Keep in mind that baggage, pets, or special equipment may come with extra fees.

Ferry timetables can change seasonally, so it’s best to check departure times and fares before you travel.

Getting Around Capri

Walking

Capri is small but very hilly. Many of the island’s roads are narrow, steep, and full of stairs — which makes walking both beautiful and challenging. If you’re visiting during high season, walking can even be faster than waiting for crowded buses.

Suggested walking routes:

  • Capri Town – Marina Grande: 15 minutes downhill via a long stairway

  • Anacapri – Marina Grande: about 40 minutes (900 steps via the Phoenician Steps)

  • Capri – Marina Piccola: 20 minutes via Via Mulo

Tip: It’s easier to climb up the Phoenician Steps than to go down — the steps are high and uneven.

Buses

Capri’s bus network is small but efficient, connecting Marina Grande, Capri Town, Anacapri, and main attractions like the Blue Grotto and Punta Carena Lighthouse.

  • Ticket price: €2.40 (or €2.90 if bought onboard)

  • Day pass: €7.20 (+ €1 deposit) – recommended if you plan to ride more than four times

  • Luggage and pets require an additional small fee

Approximate travel times:

  • Capri – Anacapri: 15 min

  • Marina Grande – Anacapri: 25 min

  • Capri – Marina Piccola: 20 min

  • Anacapri – Blue Grotto: 20 min

  • Anacapri – Punta Carena: 20 min

Tickets can be purchased at Marina Grande, the Piazzetta, or local bus stations. Two companies operate the island’s bus services: Autobus ATC (towards Capri) and Autobus Staiano (towards Anacapri).

Funicular

The Capri Funicular connects Marina Grande (the port) with Capri Town.

  • Duration: ~4 minutes

  • Ticket: €2.40, purchased in advance at the ticket office near the station

  • Operating hours: from early morning until around 10 PM (closed from January to Easter for maintenance)

This is the fastest and most scenic way to reach the town center. During summer, expect queues — in that case, taxis or walking are good alternatives.

Chairlift to Mount Solaro

From Anacapri, take the Mount Solaro Chairlift to reach the island’s highest point (589 m). Hop on the Mount Solaro chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri — a scenic 12-minute ride that costs €11 one way or €14 round trip. The peaceful ride glides over rooftops, fields, and gardens and the views from the top are among the most stunning on the island. Even those with mild vertigo can usually enjoy it comfortably.

Taxis

Capri’s taxis are iconic — vintage convertible cabs with open tops. While not cheap, they’re a comfortable and fun way to travel between sights, especially in the summer heat.

Fares are fixed for most routes, but always confirm the price before departure.

Scooter Rental

Cars are heavily restricted on Capri — only locals, taxis, and buses can drive during high season.
For independent exploration, renting a scooter is the best option. Rentals are available at Marina Grande, Capri Town, and Anacapri.

A boat trip around Capri is one of the best ways to experience its beauty — especially if you’re only visiting for a day.

  • Marina Grande – Blue Grotto round trip (entrance ticket to the cave €14)

  • Marina Grande – Faraglioni route (half island)

  • Full island tour with optional Blue Grotto stop
