How to Get to Seceda
Walking from Ortisei (La Curta)
If you’re staying in Ortisei, you don’t even need a car. The La Curta pedestrian connection links the town center (Piazza S. Antonio) directly to the Seceda cable car.
This unique system includes:
- 6 covered escalators
- 4 underground walkways
It’s open 24/7, although escalators don’t run at night.

There’s a large paid parking area at the Seceda cable car station in Ortisei.
- Indoor + outdoor parking available
- Fills up quickly in peak season
- Arrive early for the best chance
Car rental – Tip
Search and book a car on one of the popular search portals and find the best deal for you!
One of my favorite search sites is Discovercars.com, because there are no hidden costs, you can cancel the reservation for free if your travel plans change, and last but not least, they offer rental cars at very reasonable prices. The filters allow you to select the type of card you want to use, the amount of the deposit and the payment terms.
By Bus
Public transport is a great option in South Tyrol.
- Frequent buses connect nearby towns to Ortisei
- Many accommodations include free transport passes

Seceda Cable Car Guide
The easiest way to reach Seceda is by cable car. From Ortisei, you’ll need to take two lifts:
- Ortisei → Furnas (small gondola)
- Furnas → Seceda (large cable car)
This is the most direct route to the iconic viewpoint.

Useful information about Seceda
What to Expect at Seceda
If you’re visiting the Dolomites for a short time, or if you don’t feel like hiking too much, Seceda is definitely worth a visit. Although getting up the mountain isn’t cheap, in good weather you’ll be treated to unparalleled views of the jagged peaks of the Odle/Geisler group, the Sella Range, Sassolungo, and Marmolada.
If you’re only interested in the views and want to take a short walk to the main lookouts, you’ll only need about two hours. But if you’d like to go on a longer hike or have lunch here, set aside half a day or a full day for this outing.
At 2,500 meters, Seceda offers one of the best panoramic views in the Dolomites.
From the top, you can see:
- Odle / Geisler peaks
- Sella Group
- Sassolungo
- Marmolada
On clear days, even distant peaks like Großglockner are visible.
Is Seceda Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
Whether you’re looking for:
- an easy scenic viewpoint
- a relaxed hiking day
- or an iconic Dolomites photo spot
Seceda delivers on every level.
How Much Time Do You Need?
The amount of time you’ll need at Seceda really depends on how deep you want to explore the area.
If you’re short on time, around two hours is enough to take the cable car up, walk to the main viewpoint, and enjoy a short stroll along the ridge. This is perfect if you simply want to experience the famous views without committing to a longer hike.
For a more relaxed visit, plan at least half a day. This gives you time to explore a few trails, stop for photos, and maybe enjoy a drink at one of the mountain huts.
If you love hiking or want to make the most of your visit, a full day is ideal. This way, you can combine multiple routes, walk down into the valley, and take proper breaks at the huts along the way.
- 2 hours → viewpoint + short walk
- Half day → add easy hiking
- Full day → longer hikes + lunch stops

Photography Tips
Seceda is truly a dream location for photographers, and the conditions can completely transform the experience.
The early morning hours offer soft light and a much quieter atmosphere, making it one of the best times to visit if you want to avoid crowds. Sunset is equally rewarding, with warm tones and dramatic shadows adding depth to the already stunning landscape.
Don’t be discouraged by cloudy weather either. In fact, moving clouds often create a much more dynamic and moody scene, giving your photos a unique and atmospheric feel that you won’t get on a clear day.

Best Things to Do in Seceda
Visit the Famous Viewpoint
The iconic circular viewpoint is about a 10-minute walk from the top station.
- Short but steep uphill walk
- 360° panoramic views
- Information board with peak names

Walk Along the Seceda Ridgeline
One of the best experiences is walking along the Seceda ridge. After taking in the panoramic view from the lookout, continue your walk toward the ridge along the upper trail.
If you’re really just looking for a short walk, after a few hundred meters you’ll have the option to turn back toward the upper station of the cable car
- Multiple viewpoints along the trail
- Incredible photo opportunities
- Easy to customize distance

Easy Hike to Pieralongia
If you want to go a bit further, head towards Pieralongia rock.
- Unique 60-meter rock formation
- Less crowded than main viewpoint
- Beautiful alpine scenery
The rock formation is clearly visible from a distance, so you don’t need any special directions – just follow the trail after you’ve turned toward the valley. You’ll come to a fork in the trail: one path leads to the Baita Troier Hütte, and the other leads to the rock formation.
We stopped for a refreshment at the Malga Pieralongia Alm hut, located near the rocks, and then turned back to the upper station of the cable car. We returned to the the cable car via the Baita Troier Hütte. The hut’s terrace offers an incredible view of the valley, and there’s also a playground and a small petting zoo next to it.

If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, you can continue from here to the Rifugio Firenze mountain hut, passing by the “Punto panoramico Unesco” viewpoint. Follow the trail marked with the number 1 on the official map to return to the cable car.
Relax in the Valley
You can also explore the valley below:
- Scenic trails between huts
- Great food & terraces
- Perfect for a relaxed day
Just remember: you’ll need to hike back uphill to the cable car.

Personal Experience
Even though we didn’t have perfect weather, our visit to Seceda turned out to be one of the highlights of our Dolomites trip.
We opted for a more relaxed itinerary, starting with the main viewpoint before continuing along the ridgeline. From there, we made our way towards Pieralongia, enjoying the changing scenery as we walked, and eventually returned via a slightly different route.
What made the experience truly special was the constantly shifting cloud cover. Instead of clear blue skies, we were surrounded by rolling clouds that added a dramatic and almost surreal atmosphere to the landscape. It felt completely different from the typical postcard views – yet just as memorable, if not even more.
