Best Things to Do & Must-See Places in the Lofoten Islands

1. Visit the small village of Laukvik

A tiny settlement in a beautiful setting on Austvågøya. Don’t miss the Laukvik Lighthouse and what locals call “Norway’s smallest information center.” Stop for a coffee at Keans Beans, the cozy local café.

2. Visit Sildpollnes Chapel & Austnesfjorden viewpoint

The white Sildpollnes Chapel stands on a peninsula surrounded by towering peaks – one of Lofoten’s most photographed spots.
Nearby you’ll find the Austnesfjorden viewpoint with a wooden boardwalk that seems to float above the landscape. The rest area with the viewpoint is part of the Lofoten National Tourist Route.

3. Explore Svolvær — the capital of Lofoten

Svolvær is the unofficial capital of the archipelago — lively yet charming, full of hotels, restaurants, shops, and galleries. A great base if you want to stay several nights and explore the northern part of Lofoten.

4. Experience the Midnight Sun or the Northern Lights

Visit in summer to witness the magic of the Midnight Sun, or come between September and March for a chance to see the Northern Lights dance over the mountains.

5. Go hiking — Lofoten’s most scenic trails

Lofoten offers countless hiking options, from short beginner-friendly walks to full-day treks.
My favorites: Fløya & Djevelporten, Mannen, Ryten & Kvalvika Beach, Reinebringen (close to 2,000 steps — but the views are priceless)

During our trip, we stayed at Skårungen – Hotel, Cabins and Camping, and it turned out to be the perfect base for exploring the islands. Located just outside of Svolvær, the property offers breathtaking views over the fjord and mountains, whether you’re waking up in a cozy hotel room, a traditional cabin, or even your own camper.

We loved the relaxed atmosphere – after long days of hiking and sightseeing, it felt wonderful to come back to a place where you can unwind in comfort. The on-site restaurant serves delicious local dishes, and there’s even a spa with outdoor hot tubs where you can soak while enjoying panoramic Arctic views. If you’re looking for a convenient location, a variety of accommodation options, and that authentic Lofoten vibe, Skårungen is an excellent choice.

6. Discover Kabelvåg

Only 5 km from Svolvær, Kabelvåg offers several points of interest:

  • Vågan Church (“the Lofoten Cathedral”)

  • Lofoten Museum (Lofotmuseet) — part of the SKREI Experience. Website

  • Lofoten Aquarium and Espolin Gallery — just a short walk away

7. Join a Trollfjord boat trip

Take a boat tour into the narrow Trollfjord and join a sea eagle safari. This is one of the most impressive fjords in the region. We joined a Sea Eagle Safari and Trollfjord cruise with Lofoten Explorer. It was thrilling to see the majestic eagles so close. If you wish, you can also choose Brim’s hybrid-electric boat, which was specially built for this purpose.

8. Henningsvær — the most picturesque village

Henningsvær is spread across several small islands, famous for its dramatic mountain backdrop and the world-famous Henningsvær football field. A scenic, lively fishing village just 20 minutes from Svolvær.

9. Step back in time at the Lofotr Viking Museum

Located in Borg, the Lofotr Viking Museum brings visitors 1,000 years back in time. Learn how Viking life looked in Lofoten and visit the reconstruction of the largest longhouse ever found. Book your ticket now

Car rental – Tip

Search and book a car on one of the popular search portals and find the best deal for you!
One of my favorite search sites is Discovercars.com, because there are no hidden costs, you can cancel the reservation for free if your travel plans change, and last but not least, they offer rental cars at very reasonable prices. The filters allow you to select the type of card you want to use, the amount of the deposit and the payment terms.

10. Eggum Picnic Area

Eggum is a coastal fishing village with an amphitheatre-shaped viewpoint, parking and restrooms (closed Oct–May). Nearby you can also find Markus Raetz’s rotating head sculpture. A perfect spot for sunsets or Northern Lights watching.

11. Explore the best beaches on the north coast

Lofoten has some of Europe’s most beautiful Arctic beaches:

  • Unstad Beach — surfers’ paradise

  • Vik Beach – a beautiful beach on the way to Haukland

  • Haukland Beach – the trail to Mannen starts from here.

  • Uttakleiv Beach — fantastic for the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights, my personal favorite

12. Stroll through Nusfjord

Nusfjord is one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fishing villages, located in a sheltered bay. Entry is paid (100 NOK), but the authentic atmosphere and views make it well worth it. You can book accommodation in an original Norwegian fishing cabin, sign up for various programs, and visit the well-preserved buildings.

13. Enjoy fresh seafood in Sakrisøy

Located between Hamnøy and Reine, Sakrisøy is a tiny island famous for Anita’s Sjømat — a must-try place offering fresh cod, smoked salmon, trout, caviar and seasonal seafood. Perfect for a quick “grab & go” lunch.

14. Relax at Ramberg Beach

A wide, white-sand beach perfect for a break during your Lofoten road trip. Nearby you’ll find the Ramberg viewpoint, also part of the Lofoten National Tourist Route.

15. Visit the Buksnes Church

This striking wooden church in Dragestil style was built in 1905. A beautiful architectural stop on Vestvågøy.

Did you know?

Dragestil is a style of design and architecture that originated in Norway and was widely used principally between 1880 and 1910. The foremost sources of inspiration for the Dragestil style were the Viking and medieval art and architecture of Scandinavia.

16. Visit Flakstad and the local beaches

Flakstad Church, Flakstad Beach, and Skagsanden Beach offer wonderful scenery and picnic areas. A calm, less crowded part of the islands.

17. Photograph the iconic Hamnøy

Hamnøy is the most photographed location in Lofoten — home to the famous red cabins of Eliassen Rorbuer. Easy to access, with small parking spots and incredible sunrise views. The red fishing cabins with sharp peaks rising behind them are postcard-perfect. If you’d like to stay in one of these cabins, you can book here – Eliassen Rorbuer.

18. Discover Reine — Lofoten’s most famous village

Reine is the postcard-perfect village of the islands, with only a few hundred residents and endless photo opportunities. Don’t miss:

  • Reine viewpoint

  • Reine Kultursenter (gallery + souvenirs)

  • Reinebringen hike — 448 meters high with a stairway of nearly 2,000 steps

19. Å — the southernmost village

Å is the last stop of the E10 road. Enjoy the viewpoints, the small village center and the traditional fish-drying racks that Lofoten is famous for.

If you’re traveling in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, or Finland, Scandic Hotels is a name you can count on. With properties in nearly every major city, Scandic is a popular choice among travelers for its consistent quality, excellent value, and reliable comfort.

Most locations offer a generous breakfast buffet included in the price, along with family-friendly amenities. Rooms are clean, modern, and straightforward, and the staff is known for being warm and helpful.

20. Remote, Car-Free Beaches on the Northern Coast

Along the northern coast of Lofoten you’ll find three stunning beaches that can only be reached on foot — and the effort is absolutely worth it. Their remote location makes them truly magical: no power lines, no cars, no crowds. Just you and the wild Arctic landscape. These hidden gems are Bunes Beach, Horseid Beach, and Kvalvika Beach — each offering untouched nature, dramatic mountain peaks, and a sense of solitude that’s becoming increasingly rare in Lofoten.
