Tips & Practical Info for Your Lofoten Trip
Best Time to Visit
Summer (June–August): Midnight sun, long days, perfect for hiking and beach walks.
Winter (November–March): Best chance to see the northern lights, plus skiing and cozy evenings.
Spring & Autumn: Quieter, with changing light and colors – but more unpredictable weather.
Getting Around
Renting a car is the easiest way to explore the islands at your own pace. Book early, especially in summer.
Distances may look short on the map, but narrow roads and frequent photo stops mean drives take longer than expected.
The Lofoten Scenic Route
Norway has several designated Scenic Routes, and the Lofoten Scenic Route stretches 230 km from Å to Raftsundet. Along the way you’ll find architect-designed viewpoints like Austnesfjorden, Eggum, and Akkarvikodden – each offering a chance to stop, breathe, and soak in the landscapes. – Norwegian Scenic Route – Lofoten website
Where to Stay
For a central base: Svolvær or Leknes. We stayed at Skårungen – Hotel, Cabins and Camping, which offered beautiful views and a cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect base for exploring the islands.
For a more remote, iconic experience: Reine or Hamnøy in the south.
Traditional rorbuer cabins are a unique way to experience the islands, often located right on the water. If you’d like to stay in one of these cabins, Hamnøy is home to the famous Eliassen Rorbuer.
If you need to stay close to the airport, the Aiden by Best Western Harstad Narvik Airport (Evenes) is a convenient option, especially for late-night or early-morning flights. Don’t forget to fill up your rental car at the nearby Circle K station before returning it – it’s open 24/7.
Packing Tips
Weather changes quickly – bring layers, waterproof clothing, and sturdy hiking shoes.
Even in summer, temperatures are mild (10–18°C), so don’t expect tropical weather despite the white-sand beaches.
A headlamp is essential if you visit in winter, while sunglasses are a must in summer’s bright midnight sun.
Car rental – Tip
Search and book a car on one of the popular search portals and find the best deal for you!
One of my favorite search sites is Discovercars.com, because there are no hidden costs, you can cancel the reservation for free if your travel plans change, and last but not least, they offer rental cars at very reasonable prices. The filters allow you to select the type of card you want to use, the amount of the deposit and the payment terms.

Route Options
Depending on where you arrive, there are several ways to follow my Lofoten islands itinerary:
Option 1 – Arrival and Departure via Narvik: This itinerary is written from north to south, starting in Narvik (Harstad/Narvik Airport) and ending in the southern villages. Svolvær or its surroundings make an ideal base or book hotel in two locations (north and south)
Option 2 – Arrival and Departure via Bodø: If you fly into Bodø and take the ferry to Moskenes, simply follow the route in reverse, traveling northward. It’s best to book accommodation in just two locations — one in the north and one in the south — to minimize driving time.
Option 3 – One-Way Trip (Narvik to Bodø): If you’re traveling with your own car or don’t mind a one-way rental, start in the north (you can even visit the War Museum in Narvik if you’re interested in history) and continue south through the islands. End your trip by taking the ferry across to Bodø for a scenic finish.
Travel Style Tips – How to combine the itinerary below
Short on time? Combine days by skipping one or two hikes. Or just visit the beaches along your route and don’t make any detours to more distant shores.
Have more than a week? Slow down and add extra hikes or explore the northern Vesterålen islands. Or take part in a whale watching tour departing from the more distant villages of Andenes and Stø (officially not part of the Lofoten Islands).
Mix active days (hiking, kayaking, boat tours) with relaxing ones (village walks, beach picnics) for a balanced experience.
You can easily adapt this Lofoten Islands itinerary to your travel style — from adventure-packed days to relaxed coastal drives.
Remember!
Distances may look short on the map, but narrow roads and frequent photo stops mean drives take longer than expected.
Day 1 – Arrival in the Lofoten Islands
Most travelers arrive either at Harstad/Narvik (Evenes) Airport in the north or via Bodø in the south. If you’re flying into Narvik, expect about a 3-hour drive to reach Svolvær, the unofficial “capital” of the Lofoten Islands. Coming from Bodø means a scenic ferry ride across the Vestfjord, the perfect introduction to the islands.
On your way south from Narvik, make sure to stop at Sildpollnes Chapel, a tiny wooden church beautifully located on a fjord peninsula with towering peaks as a backdrop. Just a few minutes further, you’ll find the Austnesfjorden viewpoint, with its wooden boardwalk offering sweeping views over the fjord and the mountains. Both stops are part of Norway’s official Scenic Routes.
📍 Driving distance: ~170 km from Narvik to Svolvær
⏱ Driving time: about 3 hours
🏡 Where to stay: Svolvær or nearby Kabelvåg makes the perfect base for the first nights.

Day 2 – Explore Svolvær, Kabelvåg & Fløya Hike
Svolvær is the cultural and commercial hub of the Lofoten Islands, offering a mix of shops, restaurants, art galleries, and harbor views. Despite being the largest town on the islands, it still feels cozy and easy to explore on foot. Just 5 km away lies Kabelvåg, one of the oldest fishing villages in the region. Don’t miss the Vågan Church, often nicknamed the Lofoten Cathedral, and the open-air Lofoten Museum alongside the Lofoten Aquarium.
In the afternoon (or in the morning), lace up your hiking boots for the Fløya hike (4.5 km, 3–4 hours, 580 m elevation). The trail passes the famous Djevelporten (Devil’s Gate) rock formation before leading up to stunning viewpoints over Svolvær and the surrounding mountains. If you’re adventurous, you might even want to try the Svolværgeita (Goat’s Horn) rock climb – but only with a guide and proper equipment.
📍 Driving distance: 15 km round trip
⏱ Driving time: 20 minutes
🏡 Where to stay: Another night in Svolvær or nearby Kabelvåg.

Where to Stay in Lofoten
During our trip, we stayed at Skårungen – Hotel, Cabins and Camping, and it turned out to be the perfect base for exploring the islands. Located just outside of Svolvær, the property offers breathtaking views over the fjord and mountains, whether you’re waking up in a cozy hotel room, a traditional cabin, or even your own camper. We loved the relaxed atmosphere – after long days of hiking and sightseeing, it felt wonderful to come back to a place where you can unwind in comfort. The on-site restaurant serves delicious local dishes, and there’s even a spa with outdoor hot tubs where you can soak while enjoying panoramic Arctic views. If you’re looking for a convenient location, a variety of accommodation options, and that authentic Lofoten vibe, Skårungen is an excellent choice.

Day 3 – Sea Eagle Safari in the Trollfjord, Henningsvær & Viking History
Start your morning with one of the most unforgettable experiences in Lofoten – a Sea Eagle Safari and Trollfjord cruise. Departing from Svolvær, these boat tours bring you face-to-face with majestic sea eagles, and the dramatic cliffs of Trollfjord make for an epic backdrop. Eco-friendly electric boats are also available if you prefer a quieter ride.
After the cruise, drive to Henningsvær, a picturesque fishing village spread across several small islands. Wander through narrow streets, browse art galleries, and don’t miss the famous football field with mountains rising right behind it.
On your way to Vestvågøy, stop at Rørvikstranda Beach, a peaceful stretch of white sand, and later at the Torvdalshalsen viewpoint, which offers sweeping views of fields and mountains. Continue to Eggum, where a coastal amphitheater faces the open sea – a magical spot for sunsets or even the northern lights in winter.
End the day at the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg, where you can step inside a reconstructed Viking longhouse and experience daily life as it was a thousand years ago. Don’t forget to check the opening hours as they vary depending on the season.
📍 Driving distance: ~170 km (round trip depending on stops)
⏱ Driving time: ~3.5 hours
🏡 Where to stay: Stay in Svolvær again, or move towards Leknes if you prefer shorter drives in the next days.

Boat Excursion: We joined a Sea Eagle Safari and Trollfjord cruise with Lofoten Explorer. It was thrilling to see the majestic eagles so close. If you wish, you can also choose Brim’s hybrid-electric boat, which was specially built for this purpose.
Day 4 – Mannen Hike & the Most Beautiful Beaches
Start your day with a road trip toward some of the most breathtaking beaches in Lofoten. Vik Beach, Haukland Beach and Uttakleiv Beach are all close to each other and perfect for a beach-hopping day. Haukland is often called the Caribbean of the Arctic with its turquoise water, while Uttakleiv is a famous spot to watch the midnight sun or the northern lights.
For a bit more adventure, hike up to Mannen (400 m elevation, 3–4 hours round trip). This moderate trail rewards you with sweeping views over Haukland and Uttakleiv beaches – easily one of the most photogenic panoramas in Lofoten.
📍 Driving distance: ~140 km round trip
⏱ Driving time: ~2.5 hours
🏡 Where to stay: Svolvær if you don’t mind the drive, or move your base to Leknes for shorter commutes.

Day 5 – Flakstadøya, Nusfjord & Optional Ryten Hike
Today it’s time to explore Flakstadøya, another island rich in scenic stops. Begin at the Skreda viewpoint, part of the official Scenic Route, then continue to Myrland and Storsandnes Beaches – both quiet spots ideal for northern lights photography in winter.
Next, visit Nusfjord, one of the oldest and best-preserved fishing villages in Norway. Colorful rorbuer cabins line the harbor, and the whole village feels like stepping back in time. Note that there’s a small entrance fee, but it’s well worth it.
Not far away lies Flakstad Church, a charming wooden church dating back to the 18th century. From there, head to Ramberg Beach, a wide stretch of white sand with mountains rising dramatically behind it.
In the afternoon, if the weather is on your side, consider the Ryten and Kvalvika Beach hike. The trail takes about 4–5 hours, leading to one of Lofoten’s most iconic viewpoints overlooking the wild Kvalvika Bay. It’s a must-do if you have the time and energy.
📍 Driving distance: ~150 km round trip
⏱ Driving time: ~3 hours
🏡 Where to stay: Stay in Leknes for convenience, or continue south towards Reine for an early start tomorrow.

The Ryten and Kvalvika Beach hike was also on our bucket list, but unfortunately, due to the weather, we decided not to go. This means I cannot report on my personal experiences.
Day 6 – Southern Lofoten & Reinebringen Hike
The southern tip of the Lofoten Islands is where you’ll find some of the most iconic views in Norway. Start your day at the Akkarvikodden viewpoint, designed with clean lines and granite benches – it’s a great spot to take in the dramatic coastal scenery.
Continue to Hamnøy, probably the most photographed location in Lofoten. The red fishing cabins (rorbuer) with sharp peaks rising behind them are postcard-perfect. If you’d like to stay in one of these cabins, Hamnøy is home to the famous Eliassen Rorbuer.
Next stop: Sakrisøy, a small island known for its golden-colored cabins and fresh seafood. Make time for lunch at Anita’s Seafood, one of the most beloved local eateries.
From there, head to Reine, a charming fishing village often called the crown jewel of Lofoten. Stroll along the harbor, visit art galleries, or enjoy a traditional Norwegian meal with its cozy atmosphere and fjord views.
In the afternoon, hike up to Reinebringen (448 m, about 2–3 hours round trip). Thanks to a stone staircase of almost 2,000 steps, the climb is steep but safe, and the panoramic views over the fjords and islands are nothing short of spectacular.
If time allows, drive to the very end of the road to Å, the southernmost village of Lofoten. Here you’ll find a scenic viewpoint, a fish-drying station, and a couple of charming cafés like Vedsjåen Café – the perfect place to end your day.
📍 Driving distance: ~130 km round trip
⏱ Driving time: ~2-3 hours
🏡 Where to stay: Reine or Hamnøy for a magical overnight experience, or return to Leknes if you prefer a central base.

Day 7 – Departure & Extra Time for Missed Spots
On your last day in Lofoten, take it easy and adjust your schedule based on your flight or ferry time. If you’re flying out of Evenes (Harstad/Narvik Airport), plan for about a 3-4 hour drive back north. From the southern villages like Reine or Å, it can take 5–6 hours, so allow enough time. If you’re leaving via Bodø, check the ferry schedule in advance and arrive early at Moskenes harbor.
Use this day to revisit your favorite spots or explore anything you missed earlier in the week. Maybe enjoy a relaxed morning coffee in Lofoten, take a short beach walk, or stop by one last viewpoint along the Scenic Route.
Save this Lofoten Islands itinerary for later or use it as your day-by-day travel guide through the archipelago.
📍 Driving distance: depends on your departure point (2–6 hours)
⏱ Travel tip: Always double-check ferry and flight schedules, as weather can cause last-minute changes.
