The Reinebringen hike is one of the most iconic and rewarding hikes in the Lofoten Islands. Despite its relatively short distance, it offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in all of Norway — overlooking Reine village, Reinefjord, and the dramatic peaks rising straight from the sea.
During our one-week road trip around the Lofoten Islands, we planned to complete four hikes. Weather conditions allowed us to do three of them, and Reinebringen was absolutely the highlight. Short, steep, challenging — and unforgettable.

Why the Reinebringen Hike Is So Popular
Reinebringen is not the highest peak in the Lofoten Islands, but its beauty more than makes up for it. The viewpoint sits directly above one of the most photographed villages in Norway, making this hike famous worldwide.
Thanks to the stone staircase built by Nepalese Sherpa teams, the trail has become more accessible — but don’t underestimate it. The stairs are steep, relentless, and can be physically demanding.
Important:
The Reinebringen hike is not recommended in winter or in rainy conditions, as the steps can become extremely slippery.

Parking & Getting There
Reinebringen is located just west of Reine village.
Recommended Parking Options:
Free: Djupfjord viewpoint parking (1.3 km west of the trailhead, largest free parking area)
Free (limited): Small parking area at the beginning of the road into Reine
Paid: Parking in Reine near the Kultursenter
- Paid: Large parking lot on Reine town center, at “Ytre Havn”.
Parking is strictly forbidden along the road.
Combine the Hike With Exploring Reine
Since the Reinebringen hike is a half-day activity, it pairs perfectly with exploring Reine village itself. Walk along the harbor, enjoy the views from the bridges, or relax at a local café after the hike.
Reinebringen Hike Facts & Trail Information
Distance: 1.1 km one way + distance from the parking lot
Duration: 1–2 hours round trip
Elevation gain: approx. 450 meters
Difficulty: Moderate
Trail type: Stone staircase almost the entire way
The staircase consists of over 1,900 stone steps and ends about 50 meters below the summit. From there, you carefully make your way to the viewpoint.
Although the elevation gain is considered modest by Lofoten standards, the constant climbing makes this hike surprisingly tough.
Starting Point & Trail Description
The Reinebringen hike starts next to the old road on the western side of the Ramsvik Tunnel, just off the E10 highway.
We parked at a small roadside parking area along the E10 and walked to the trailhead. At the bottom of the stairs, you’ll find an information board — but no water source, so bring enough water with you.
As you climb higher, the views open up behind you. On the way up, the scenery is mostly at your back, while on the way down you’ll probably focus on your feet — which makes it worth stopping often to look around.

At the Top: What to Expect
Once you reach the top of the stairs, be extra careful. There are no railings, space is limited, and most people are focused on taking photos.
Expect crowds all year round — Reinebringen is popular because of its short length and spectacular views. Starting early in the morning or hiking late in the evening is highly recommended.
