The Mannen hike is one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Lofoten Islands, offering breathtaking views over three of the most beautiful beaches in northern Norway. Despite its relatively short distance, this hike delivers a true “wow” moment – without taking up your entire day.
Located on the northern side of Vestvågøy, near Haukland and Uttakleiv Beach, Mannen is a small summit along a mountain ridge connecting higher peaks. From the top, the turquoise sea and white sandy beaches look almost unreal, making this hike one of my personal favourites in Lofoten – right up there with Reinebringen.

Why I Recommend the Mannen Hike
I highly recommend the Mannen hike because it offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Lofoten Islands with relatively little effort. The trail is short but steep in places, making it perfect if you’re looking for an unforgettable hike without committing to a full-day adventure.
For me, this hike delivered that rare combination: dramatic scenery, a sense of adventure, and enough time left to explore nearby beaches afterward. If you’re planning multiple hikes in Lofoten, Mannen is an excellent addition to your itinerary.
Practical Information for the Mannen Hike
Best Time to Hike Mannen
The best time to hike Mannen is between May and September, when the trail is usually snow-free and accessible. I do not recommend this hike if the path is covered in snow or ice, as some sections run close to steep drops.
We visited Lofoten at the end of May, during an unusually warm and sunny period. The weather was perfect, and all the photos in this post were taken at that time.

Parking & Getting There
The Mannen hike starts near Haukland Beach, about a 15–20 minute drive from Leknes. You’ll find a large parking area at Haukland Beach, just before the tunnel leading to Uttakleiv.
Mannen rises directly above the tunnel, making it easy to identify the correct mountain ridge.
Combine the Mannen Hike With These Nearby Walks & Trips
One of the biggest advantages of the Mannen hike is its location – it’s incredibly easy to combine it with other scenic walks and short excursions in the area, even on the same day.
- Vik, Haukland & Uttakleiv Beach
After the hike, spend time exploring three of the most beautiful beaches in Lofoten. Each one has a different atmosphere, and the contrast between white sand, turquoise water, and rugged mountains is simply stunning. - Coastal Walk Between Haukland and Uttakleiv (4 km)
If you’re not comfortable with heights or steep sections, there’s an easy and scenic coastal path connecting Haukland Beach and Uttakleiv Beach. Start from the parking area and walk along the shoreline instead of heading toward the tunnel. This is a relaxed, mostly flat walk and a great alternative for rest days or sunset strolls. - Veggen Hike (489 m)
For a more challenging option, you can hike Veggen, the higher peak next to Mannen. The main difference is that the trail starts from Uttakleiv Beach, and the ascent is longer and more demanding – but the views are equally impressive.
We explored this area by campervan during the start of the midnight sun season, and we loved it so much that we ended up spending the night at Uttakleiv Beach. It’s an ideal spot to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and experience Lofoten at its best.

Distance: 2 km one way
Duration: 2–3 hours round trip
Elevation gain: Short but noticeable
Difficulty: Moderate, with steep sections
Trail type: Out and back
This hike is suitable for experienced hikers and older children who are not afraid of heights. It is not recommended for small children due to exposed sections near steep cliffs.
Mannen Hike Trail Description
The Mannen hike starts from the Haukland Beach parking lot. From the beach, cross the road and follow the old asphalt road on the opposite side. The easiest way is to simply follow this road for about 500 meters, until you spot a clear trail heading uphill.
Don’t forget to turn around occasionally – the views over Haukland Beach are already stunning from the lower sections of the trail.
Make sure you follow the trail leading left along the ridge, not the path going straight toward Uttakleiv or the route toward Himmeltinden. The trail climbs steadily, with some rocky sections and areas that pass close to steep drops.
As you approach the summit, the trail levels out briefly before the final short ascent. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping views in every direction.
To the south, you’ll see Vik and Haukland Beach. To the north, Uttakleiv Beach stretches along the coastline. Take your time, enjoy the view, and soak in the unique Lofoten landscape.
