Fløya rises directly behind the town of Svolvær, one of the largest towns in the Lofoten Islands. From the top, you’ll get panoramic views over the harbor, surrounding peaks, and nearby islands. Along the trail, you’ll also encounter Djevelporten, a massive boulder wedged between two rock faces, often compared to Norway’s famous Kjeragbolten.
Another viewpoint along the route leads toward Svolværgeita (the Goat Rock), a dramatic pinnacle popular with climbers. With proper equipment and a guided tour, it’s even possible to stand on its summit.
Best Time to Hike Fløya & Djevelporten
The best time to hike Fløya & Djevelporten is from late spring to early autumn. Summer offers the safest conditions and midnight sun, while spring and autumn can bring more dramatic light and fewer crowds.
Personal experience: We visited Lofoten in late May after several rainy days. While the weather was unusually good overall, the trail was muddy and slippery, with lingering snow patches higher up. From Djevelporten, the snow became too deep, and we couldn’t safely continue to the very top of Fløya. For most hikers, summer is the easiest and safest season.

Parking & Getting There
The trailhead is located near the Svolvær cemetery, just outside the town center.
- Paid parking is available near the trailhead.
- Parking at the nearby kindergarten is strictly forbidden.
Svolvær is easy to reach by car, ferry, or even Hurtigruten, making this hike one of the most accessible in Lofoten.

Duration: around 2 hours round trip
Elevation gain: ~590 meters
Difficulty: Moderate
Trail type: Stone staircases, rocky sections, boardwalks
Despite the short distance, the elevation gain makes this hike surprisingly intense.
Fløya & Djevelporten hike Trail Description
The hike starts with a steep stone staircase built by Sherpas, often referred to as the Devil’s Staircase. Construction began in 2019, and today the steps reach almost all the way to Djevelporten.
Along the trail, you’ll find several benches – perfect for catching your breath and enjoying the view over Svolvær.
After the initial steep section, the terrain becomes more varied, with rocky paths and wooden boardwalks. At a signed junction, the trail splits:
- Right: toward Svolværgeita (climbing routes only)
- Left: continuing toward Fløya & Djevelporten
From here, the trail becomes less steep. You’ll first reach Djevelporten, where the bravest hikers climb onto the boulder for photos. Please be extremely cautious – during our visit, we witnessed a risky climb that could have ended badly.
Many hikers turn around at Djevelporten, as the final section toward Fløya’s summit is more exposed and technical.

Practical Tips for the Djevelporten Hike
- Wear proper hiking shoes – the trail can be muddy and slippery
- Bring enough water and snacks (no water sources along the route)
- Avoid risky behavior on Djevelporten rock
- Check the weather forecast before hiking (Yr.no – Svolvær)
